My Dad
Perspective

Last year my little sister got married.  The happy day was on July 1, 2004.  This is my blessing to Joi and Justin.

I wish you grace in your new life
because
you made me feel at home
when I was far from home.
(For I could not cure loneliness alone).

I wish you
friendship
in your life
because
you used to braid my hair
and place your
barrettes
there.
(The hair is shorter, greyer, thinner now).

I wish you laughter in your life
because
we danced when you were small
and stumbling did not fall.
(We laughed and started over once again).

I wish you harmony in life
because
we sang a lullaby
“hush baby, do not cry”.
(That mockingbird still haunts my memory).

I wish you comfort in your life
because
of those who never knew
the precious, caring you.
(You hurt and there was nothing I could do).

I wish you Joy in your new life
because
that word reflects your name
and your heart like a flame
illuminates and warms your family.

Perception is a curious thing.  I look at my little sister today and see a poised, beautiful woman.  But beyond the adult I still see the irrepressible 5-year-old I first knew.
